Known as the Tennessee Boys until after the Battle of Shilo, appx. 500 G-CO.
went into battle appx. 120 G.-CO. came out. Split G-CO. up after that.
Private Cox lived through Shilo, and was captured at Lookout Valley, and
spent the
remainder of the war at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana---P.O.W.
Realesed on Oath June 12, 1865. Died 1916-Buried Cox's Chapel cemetary,
Coxville, Tennessee.

Burnside's forces did not cross the Stone Bridge successfully and roll up the
Confederate right flank. Two brigades were decimated trying to cross that bridge by
Confederate sharp shooters on the ridge above. The Kanawha Brigade was the third
ordered to cross the bridge. Evidently a smart sergeant said "screw the general" turn
right. That Brigade waded Antietam Creek 350 meters north of the bridge and then turned
the Confederate right flank, until A.P. Hills 8000 arrived from Harper's Ferry. My
immigrant German grandfather, Cpl. Heinrich Schuehler was there in the 28th Ohio.
